This interactive map tracks geopolitical developments in the north-west Pacific region of Micronesia. Last upended by violence during WW2, Micronesia is once again the object of geostrategic competition for power, this time between the U.S. and China.
Where the U.S. once counted on its defense agreements with ‘First Island Chain’ countries such as Japan and South Korea, their acceding to U.S. control in conflict is no longer guaranteed. As a result the U.S. is regrouping around the ‘Guam Cluster’ in Micronesia, along the Second Island Chain. Here, where the U.S. claims unfettered military basing, access and overflight rights, a massive military build-up is underway.
The map is updated regularly by local experts and highlights a host of military, maritime, and diplomatic activities across Micronesia. Use the layers toolbar to explore different layers.
